Enjoy summer fun at Waverly Daze

By Liz Hellmann

Waverly Daze offers much more than food, music, fishing, and fun – it offers a chance for family and friends to come together and celebrate.

The festivities take place each year the weekend following the Fourth of July.

The celebration kicks off Friday evening with T-ball games for the little guys and music and prizes in the Waverly Legion Memorial Park by the lake.

Fireworks set the festive mood for the weekend at 10:15 p.m. Friday night, and kicks off the first men’s fast pitch softball game of the weekend, under the lights at the park.

Throughout Saturday and Sunday the fast pitch tournament continues, along with the tractor show at Railroad Park, and volleyball tournament. Hungry participants and fans can help themselves to one of the many food booths that run throughout the weekend, including the Knights of Columbus food booth.

Area anglers scramble to get into the fishing contest sponsored by the Waverly Lake Association, which fills up quickly each year. The contest begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

The horseshoe tournament gets going Saturday afternoon as well, along with a boat parade on Big Waverly Lake.

The evening heats up with live bands performing in Waverly Legion Memorial Park.

The annual pancake breakfast in the Knights of Columbus Village Hall starts Sunday off right, followed by the parade at 1 p.m.

Organizers are also working on starting the first 5K run for the celebration, which would take place on Sunday.

The Waverly Legion provides a pork dinner at the Knights of Columbus Village Hall in the evening, setting the stage for the queen’s coronation.

A queen’s tea is served after the coronation, so everyone can meet the new royalty.

Waverly Daze is sponsored by the KCs, Waverly Lions, and the City of Waverly. For more information, contact Tom Ogle of the Waverly Lions at (763) 658-4322.
