Montrose celebrates 125th anniversary

By Liz Hellmann

Montrose Days is always a time when residents can relive old times and make new memories, but this year’s Montrose Days is especially poignant as it celebrates the town’s 125th anniversary.

Settled more than a century ago, Montrose still prides itself in small-town friendliness and hard-working citizens. This is obvious in the many organizations and volunteers that help make Montrose Days possible, along with the friends and neighbors who make the celebration worthwhile.

In special recognition of Montrose’s 125th year, there will be a fireworks display Saturday night during Montrose Days.

Montrose Days takes place the third weekend in August and includes many events for all ages.

The ever-popular medallion hunt, sponsored by the Montrose Lions, takes place throughout the weekend, with new clues being posted at the city hall.

The Suzuki Kids string instruments group from the Montrose Elementary School add musical enjoyment Friday, along with the junior royalty coronation.

Saturday is a busy day with a doubles horseshoe tournament, beach party with KRWC, and a pork chop dinner.

The party carries into the evening hours with street dances both Friday and Saturday night.

All three days of the celebration are filled with carnival shows, rides, cash drawings, food booths sponsored by local organizations, raffles, and games. Car enthusiasts are also welcome to check out the annual car show.

Sunday begins bright and early with a sunrise service, followed by the afternoon parade, and a late afternoon chicken dinner sponsored by the Montrose Lions.

The festivities culminate in the Montrose Ambassadors’ coronation at the Montrose Community Center.
