Engel retires from Montrose-Waverly bank after 22 years

A concerned mother entered the Waverly Citizens State Bank office in search of a way to earn extra money to send her children to college.

President Catherine Jackson decided to offer her a job.

Now, 22 years later, her children well out of college, Bonnie Engel of Howard Lake is ready to retire.

“It is such a great place to work. The staff and management has been very good to me over the years,” Engel said.

Engel grew up in the Waverly and Howard Lake area, and lived there after marrying her husband, Dale Engel.

“I’ve enjoyed the customers, and getting to know them over the years,” Engel said.

“The customers have grown very comfortable with her. She is efficient and always ready with a pleasant smile,” Kent Houston of the bank said.

Engel has also seen a huge shift in technology, which has changed her job significantly since she started.

“Everything is more computerized, people don’t have to come in to the bank anymore,” Engel said.

During her tenure at the bank, customer conveniences, such as Internet banking, direct deposit, and cash cards, have all taken effect.

Although the details of her job have changed, Engel’s easygoing personality has not.

“She’s taken each step in stride,” Houston said.

Engel is looking forward to spending time with their three children and six grandchildren.
